About

The High Plains Drift Inn is a working horse ranch and guest lodge in South Central Colorado. Built, owned and operated by the Robertson Family since its opening three decades ago. The High Plains has been a haven for those who want to get away from it all. Surrounded 360 degrees by the Rocky Mountains, we are the outdoor man’s paradise. It would take a lifetime to fish all the lakes, ski all the trails, and kayak all the rivers around us. Additionally, this area is home to one of the largest wild elk populations in the world, making this the perfect place for elk hunting.

About the Owner

The High Plains Drift Inn is a working horse ranch and guest lodge in South Central Colorado. Built, owned and operated by the Robertson Family since its opening three decades ago. The High Plains has been a haven for those who want to get away from it all. Surrounded 360 degrees by the Rocky Mountains, we are the outdoor man’s paradise. It would take a lifetime to fish all the lakes, ski all the trails, and kayak all the rivers around us. Additionally, this area is home to one of the largest wild elk populations in the world, making this the perfect place for elk hunting. Miles away from the nearest town, we assure you peace and quiet during your stay. We are a rustic ranch, striving to give you a taste of what life was like back in the old days. A visit to our ranch is like stepping back in time, we do not have electricity so you’ll have to light up a lantern to read that book you brought along. Not that you will have time to read anyway, with so much going on you might choose not to. We have over thirty horses that need to be fed, brushed and ridden. I don’t even know how many is in our goat heard these days, I only know when they trot by together it sounds like a rain storm. Of course they have to be milked as we make our own yogurt and cheese. And the garden…well you know how gardens are constantly needing to be weeded and watered. Though we live in an area with a short growing season, we manage to grow many of our own vegetables. I said we are rustic, but don’t get the idea we are completely pioneer style. The cabins are lighted by solar and heated by propane. And don’t worry, you don’t have to bathe in the horse tank (we like our horses too much to do that to them!) We have our own water tower providing gravity flow running water so you can take a hot shower after a long day of hunting or being on the slopes. Come and enjoy some of what South Central Colorado has to offer and stay with us at the High Plains Drift Inn! ~The Robertsons
