    About

Maine is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States, bordered by Canada to the north and east; the Atlantic Ocean to the south; and New Hampshire to the west. The state’s natural resources are managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

The department preserves, protects, and enhances the inland fisheries and wildlife resources of the state. Established in 1880 to protect big game populations, MDIFW has since evolved in scope to include protection and management of fish, non-game wildlife, and habitats, as well as restoration of endangered species like the bald eagle. The department protects and enhances wildlife habitat, over 60 wildlife management areas that total over 106,000 acres, and acquires land to protect wildlife resources while allowing access for hunting, trapping and wildlife watching. The department also strives to provide diverse, sustainable recreational and commercial public use opportunities for both wild and stocked fisheries, while conserving native fish and their habitat.

Per the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Maine is home to 413,000 hunters and anglers who spend $609 million annually and support 10,387 jobs. For more information on hunting and fishing in Maine please visit www.maine.gov/ifw and for information on traveling to Maine visit www.visitmaine.com.
